The core concept of the Ratings platform is that during Ramadan in the Middle East, shopping and watching TV are huge recreational activities during a month in which many people are on vacation from school and work. In order to engage the audiences of the shows collectively during this month, Abu Dhabi Media Group (ADMG aired a new show also called Ratings, the shows premise would be a live show that interviewed TV stars and allowed viewers to vote live on their favorite shows of the season on a daily basis (coinciding with the special arcs that occur on the shows during this period) culminating with a winner at the end of the month. OAB’s objective would be to build the iOS and Android apps for viewers and the SmartTV experience for the TV show’s display.
We began work on the project for Ratings 4 weeks before the corresponding Ratings show would begin airing and knew that we would need to apply our SpecialOps model to deliver this solution for our client. Working with the team at ADMG is always a great experience and through our prior experience working on projects together we knew that while the objective was challenging it would be achievable through the appropriate approach. Working in our adapted SpecialOps model, we apply a mixed rapid application development model blended with features of a more traditional agile like SCRUM. After our extensive conversations with the ADMG team whom had already done much of the user research and persona creation, our first objective would be to rapidly develop hi-fidelity prototypes that could serve multiple purposes: (1) Serve as wireframe prototypes (2) Begin to develop aesthetic concepts and (3) Develop the information architecture and design of the system.
We simultaneously worked on designing and fine-tuning the the iOS, Android and television experiences.
The app's needed to be lightweight, yet poppy and punchy in order to fit the overall experience of Ratings. We did so with a few mechanics in particular (1) Limiting votes in order to create a great value perception, remember voting on TV was going on live (2) Making the celebration experience within the apps fun and rewarding in a delightful way.
As the set of the show would be limited we needed to create as lightweight of a solution for the SmartTV display as possible, that could work on a variety of potential devices. In light of this we opted to engineer our solution based upon web technologies.
